Austin Gates is going to have a taste of international basketball this summer. Gates, a Liberty Middle School seventh-grader, will travel with the People to People Sports Ambassador program to Holland July 17-28.
Due to the absence of USD 382 elementary school and LMS seventh-grade athletic teams, the 13-year-old has competed on YMCA or Pratt recreation teams. For the past five years, he has played basketball and baseball, and basketball for four years.
People to People was started as a government program by former United States President Dwight D. Eisenhower. Today, it is a private organization directed by his granddaughter Mary Eisenhower.
The ambassador program's intent is to "bridge cultural and political borders through education and exchange, making the world a better place for future generations. Through our programs, each Ambassador develops self-awareness, a sense of belonging, and a greater awareness of their significance in the global community," according to People to People.
The program gives participants an opportunity to:
1. Achieve personal growth
2. Interact with coaches and athletes from around the world
3. Experience different cultures and famous places in Holland
4. Compete internationally
Gates is the son of Michele Becker, and grandson of Kenny and Sandy Gates. Gates welcomes donations to help him finance the $5,700 trip's room and board, airline flight to and from Holland, transportation in Holland, meals, uniforms, and activities.
