PHS Spoils Russell's Perfect Season;

Greenbacks Down Russell 9-3

by Dennis Gonzales & The Pratt Tribune

April 29, 2008

The PHS varsity baseball team ruined perfection Friday. The Greenbacks downed Russell 9-3 in the second game of their doubleheader at Green Sports Complex and snapped the Broncos' perfect 13-0 start to the 2008 season. Russell's 13th victory came with their 10-2 game-one victory.

Down 3-2 heading into the bottom of the fifth in game two, Skylar Angood scored on a Stuart Sullivan double, tying the score at 3-3. Brady Batman's RBI double brought home Sullivan with what proved to be the game winner.

When the fifth ended, PHS led 7-3 thanks to five runs, two hits, two errors, and three walks.

Sullivan started on the mound. A fourth-inning line drive struck his Achilles heel. He moved to first and was replaced by Zach Pixler.

Pixler threw to three Russell batters before PHS head coach Pat Stivers brought back Sullivan, who surrendered a lone run the last three innings.

For the game, the right-hander allowed four hits, collected eight strikeouts, and walked five.

Angood singled on two occasions and tripled.

Tied 1-1 after two innings in game one, Russell erupted for seven third-inning runs then held the Greenbacks scoreless the final four innings.

Angood drove in a run, singled twice and tripled. He finished the doubleheader 6 for 8. Brad Richardson had two singles.

PHS, now 11-5, welcomes Haven to GSC Friday, May 2.
