The Pratt High School varsity softball team is on the 2008 KSHSAA 4A state championships doorstep after dropping Kingman 11-0 and Goodland 7-0 Monday in the quarterfinals and semifinals of the 2008 KSHSAA 4A Pratt Regional at Green Sports Complex.
The next step is the 2008 KSHSAA 4A Pratt Regional title game 5 p.m. Tuesday, May 13. The 15-5 Lady Greenbacks, seeded No. 2, will meet 18-1 Colby to decide the regional’s champion and who will advance to the state championships May 23-24 in Salina.
Colby, the No. 1 seed, shut out Ulysses 10-0 Monday after receiving a first-round bye. Defense, pitching and contributions from each Lady Greenback are making a difference.
“Our defense is really shining right now,” said PHS head coach Mike Forshee. “We’ll commit an error here or there, but I’ll tell you what, we are getting out of jams.” “We just have a lot of confidence defensively; somebody is stepping up and making a play,” he added. “We’re just shutting the door.”
Monday, PHS committed four errors over the two games. Offensively, the Lady Greenbacks scored 17 runs and produced 20 hits. “We are hitting the ball up and down the lineup,” said Forshee. “Everybody is putting the bat on the ball.”
In the Kingman victory, Haley Pevoteaux was 3 for 3 with a double and two singles. Hannah Page and Heather Goertz were 2 for 3. Up 1-0 after three, PHS exploded for four runs in the fourth and five in the fifth to invoke the mercy rule. Doubles by Olivia Barber, Goertz, and Page helped fuel the five-run uprising.
Against Goodland, who handed Colby their only loss, the Lady Greenbacks jumped in front 3-0 after three innings then added four more runs in the fifth. The big fifth-inning hammer was Ashton Neumann’s inside-the-park home run.
PHS starter Brooke Blankenship was stingy throughout the day, allowing zero runs, 10 hits, walking two, and striking out seven. “Brooke is throwing great games with a lot of ground balls like she has done all year,” said Forshee.
PHS is peaking at the right time and riding their momentum. What
would a betting man do?
“We’re playing with a lot of confidence,” said Forshee. “I wouldn’t
bet against us.”
