A longtime teacher has been honored by her colleagues as Teacher of the Year. Pat Schwartz was selected for USD 382 Pratt.
Schwartz has taught high school English and speech and middle school reading for the Pratt district since 1979. Currently at Liberty Middle School, she is also the sponsor for Builder’s Club, a student service organization.
“What I appreciate about Pat is she has high expectations for kids and she provides the resources and experiences to help them reach those expectations,” said curriculum director Suzan Patton, also a former teaching colleague of Schwartz’s. “That’s a unique skill.
“She is especially good with the middle school reading program,” Patton continued. “She has a knack for working with and helping kids who have areas for improvement. She is able to reach those kids. They’re engaged, they’re interested and involved in class every day.”
Patton also praised Schwartz’s work with the Builder’s Club, which involves students with projects at school and in the community.
“I really believe teaching kids to serve others is an important element of education,” Schwartz said.
Building site councils and district committees nominate teachers for the award and final selection is made by another district committee. Schwartz and a committee of teachers will prepare her application for the Kansas Master Teacher program through Emporia State University. The winner of that award will be announced next February.
