The Liberty Middle School varsity volleyball teams started off
their seasons with four victories over Hays Kennedy and Dodge City
Sacred Heart on Tuesday at LMS.
The eighth grade varsity team beat Hays in two games 25-17, and
27-25. Sacred Heart was a bit more difficult when the Greenbacks
lost the first game 25-19. Strong serves and the ability to play
under pressure gave the Greenbacks the advantage in games two and
three and they took the win with 25-20 and 15-13.
Kinzie Spurgin had 15 serves in both games, Hayden Pixler had 10
and Taylor Fuhr and Alexus Bishop also helped out with 7 serves
apiece to capitalize on the wins.
“All the girls did something spectacular today and they came
together as a team better than I could have hoped for just starting
off the season,” said coach Sandi Armstrong.
The seventh grade varsity got the job done against Hays with two
big wins, 25-15 and 25-20. Playing Sacred Heart, they took it home
with a 25-17 and 25-8 victory.
The JV teams lost two close matches, but all 28 girls were able to
get some playing time and all four coaches are very hopeful for a
winning season.
“We had 58 girls who started the season with us. We are down to 50,
but playing that many girls at each match is our biggest challenge
this year,” Armstrong said.
