With Luke Southard back in town for the first time since being
injured Sept. 12 at Scott City, the Pratt High School Greenbacks
were extra fired up for their Homecoming game against Thomas More
Prep.
Southard led the Greenbacks onto the field to start the game,
watched as his teammates dominated the Monarchs in a 52-11 win,
then rang the victory bell in celebration.
TMP drove inside the Pratt 20 on the first possession of the game,
but the Greenback defense held the Monarchs to a field goal with
6:10 to go in the first.
Trailing 3-0, the Pratt offense took the ball right down the field,
needing just six plays to go 78 yards and score. The largest chunk
of that came on Skylar Angood's 39-yard touchdown run at the 3:39
mark of the quarter. Chris Nicholson's extra point was right down
the middle and PHS had a 7-3 lead.
The Greenbacks went on to score three more touchdowns in the first
half, then Nicholson drilled a 39-yard field goal with 30.9 seconds
left on the clock to put the Greenbacks up 31-3.
Caleb Gillig scored three touchdowns (42-yard run, 6-yard run, and
70-yard punt return) for the Greenbacks. Angood ran for two scores,
Chase Kreutzer had one, and Jake Garrett scored the Greenbacks'
last touchdown on the second play of the fourth quarter.
TMP's only other score came with 32.9 seconds to go in the game on
a 13-yard touchdown pass from Andrew Heimann to Keith Gustin. The
pair also connected on the two-point conversion to make the final
score 52-11.
"I'm proud of our kids. It was a pretty hectic week with homecoming
and our kids really got into it and had a fun time," PHS coach Jeff
Fuss said. "We were proud that we could play well for Luke. Let's
sit back and enjoy this one tonight."
With the win, the Greenbacks are 4-1 overall and 2-1 in MSAA league
games.
Pratt will be on the road for the next three weeks, starting with a
trip to Newton Friday night.
