Bricks to build school funds

When did Pratt County historian J. Rufus Gray teach at Pratt
High School? Did his retirement end his affiliation with the
school? Who was the first homecoming queen? Has Pratt High’s
football team ever claimed a state championship? Who has been named
Teacher of the Year for USD 382?
The bricks will tell the story.
As a fund-raising project, the Pratt Public School Foundation is
selling personalized bricks to be placed in the courtyard of the
new Pratt High building. The first 100 bricks will be ordered very
soon — anyone who wants to get in on the first order should call
Foundation chair Kim Stivers at 450-1444 as soon as possible.
Bricks will only be ordered in lots of 100 or more.
Mr. Gray graduated from Pratt County High School in 1910, taught
senior high physics and chemistry from 1920 to 1955 and served on
the Board of Education from 1959-66.
Melba Norby Scott graduated in 1942 and was the first homecoming
queen. Her husband Richard’s brick will note that he was class
president and a 1941 graduate.
Bricks ordered for the McEntarfer brothers, Jeremy, Class of
’96, and Dustin, class of ’97, denote them as members of a state
championship football team. Jeff, Class of ’94, will be recognized
for being football quarterback, playing basketball and tennis.
The school district was given a special cost-only deal on bricks
for Teachers of the Year for 1967, 1978 and 1985 to the
present.
“It’s a fun project,” Stivers noted.
