Path of Pride needs bricks

By Carol Bronson

Pratt High School is “substantially complete,” but there is still a chance for Greenbacks, Greenback alumni, parents, friends, teachers and anyone else to make a permanent contribution. The Pratt Public School Foundation is sponsoring a “Bricks for Building Better Schools” project, selling personalized bricks for the courtyard.

The courtyard design has not been established, said Kim Stivers, Foundation chair and a member of the USD 382 Board of Education, but it will include a circular walkway, to be named the Greenback Path of Pride. A standard 4 inch by 8 inch brick, personalized with up to three lines of text, is available for $50. For another $25, a logo can be added. A 1 inch by 3 inch keepsake brick is available for $10. Mini bricks will not be placed in the courtyard.

Brick orders or other contributions can be mailed to Pratt Public School Foundation at P.O. Box 121 or left at any USD 382 location.

Orders were taken at the PHS open house Sunday and the campaign will continue throughout the year, Stivers said. Orders to the manufacturer will be made in lots of 100 or more and the goal is to have the bricks delivered and ready to install by March. If more bricks are wanted than will fit in the courtyard, Stivers is confident that space will be found.

Because a large response to the campaign is expected, however, the Foundation cautions people not to wait until the last minute.

Bricks can be personalized with the donor’s name, be laid in memory of a loved one, to honor a special person or commemorate a special occasion.

“There are a million reasons to put a name on a brick,” Stivers commented.

The Foundation suggests it is a perfect way to acknowledge a child’s graduation, the birth of a baby, weddings, or to thank a teacher. Available logos represent various sports and activities, occupations such as law enforcement, firefighters and emergency personnel as well as more generic symbols such as a heart, flag, angel or cross, plus the familiar Greenback logo.

Bare space now, Stivers envisions a mature courtyard similar to that at Pratt Regional Medical Center, a comforting and relaxing space that she acknowledges “did not happen overnight.”

Students are the ones who will benefit from a green space in the midst of the concrete and brick, finding a place to get some fresh air, she said. The courtyard provides natural light to interior rooms.

The project is a general fund-raiser for the Foundation. The money will be used to purchase bricks, and also to fund mini grants, activities and materials that cannot be covered by the district budget.

The Foundation is also collecting funds generated by a challenge issued by the PHS Class of 1973 for landscaping.
