Reading the line score for Kingman’s first three quarters in the Eagles’ substate loss at Pratt Tuesday night suggests a fifth-grader reciting prime numbers in math class—2 points in the first quarter, 3 in the second and 5 in the third.
All of which adds up to the visitors scoring only 10 through the first three-quarters of an eventual 56-24 loss to the Greenbacks.
Kingman, in fact, was stuck on two points until sophomore point guard Stone Hageman hit an off-balance trey with 1:48 remaining before the half. Pratt led 32-2 just prior to the make.
The deficit eventually reached 43 when Pratt led 50-7 late in the third.
Only when Pratt Coach David Swank went to the far end of his bench in quarter four did the score become less than humiliating.
True to their MO for their season, Pratt’s pressure man-to-man defense and relentless desire to run after Eagle misses left little doubt after the opening minutes as to the outcome.
By extending their defense farther and farther from the paint without allowing back cuts or lane-slashes, the Greenbacks reduced the Eagle offense to hurried, contested jump shots.
The only thing that could have made life more miserable for Steve Bangert’s club would have been the addition of a shot clock.
By allowing very few offensive rebounds by Kingman, PHS was able to run almost at will; its transition game yielding results faster than a chameleon skittering across a checkerboard.
Leading all scorers was Pratt’s Matt Swank whose 18 was the only double-digit effort beyond Kingman’s Layne Klausmeyer, who got most of his 13 late against mop-up duty.
Nine Greenbacks in all got into the scoring column, while only five did the same for Kingman.
Pratt now moves on to play 8-13 Hugoton at Kingman Friday night at 6 p.m.
Hugoton advanced to the semifinal match up by defeating Ulysses Tuesday night, 55-52, in what was decidedly a closer game.
With the win Pratt enters Friday game sporting a 19-2 season mark.
