Boy in the Striped Pajamas
Seventh graders are reading the short novel The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, a fable about the concentration camps of WWII told from the viewpoint of a nine-year-old boy. Students randomly drew a letter to determine placement in the classroom: either a German or a Jew. The classroom has been divided by a "fence" to represent the concentration camp, but also to represent the fences in our lives that we allow to divide us: hatred, racism, prejudices, poverty, etc. For a few short days, students will experience that sense of division and discrimination for no reason. This ties in well with this week's school-wide focus on bullying and cyberbullying.
